This references the 2002’s Ratchet & Clank on PS2, developed by Insomniac Games. The wrench refers to Ratchet’s melee weapon, the Omniwrench, while the Bolts refers to the currency in the Ratchet games. When you first enter the rainy section of Gusty Gateway, far in the distance to the right is a giant bird harassing/helping a Bot with a giant feather. This is a reference to the infamous The Last Guardian which eventually released in 2016 and was made by Team Ico. The Bot holding a feather refers to the game’s boxart, while the moment where he falls off and is saved by the bird references the E gameplay demo. Up the same cliff as the Ico easter egg, on the opposite side you can find a crowd observing a Bot teeing off with a golf club while wearing a PS VR headset.

As you can tell, there’s not much of a story with this game, but you don’t need a fully fleshed-out plot for this demo. Astro’s Playroom has you controlling one of the Astro Bots as you explore different areas to find artifacts. These aren’t just any items but other accessories and items from PlayStation’s history. Collecting all the items feels like you’re a curator at a PlayStation museum.
Taking place in medieval Persia, players control an unnamed protagonist who must venture through a series of dungeons to defeat the evil Grand Vizier Jaffar and save an imprisoned princess. Every area had the same problem of mandatory physical interaction to get through the level, none of which were doable for me. Every single level reached a point where I couldn’t proceed, leaving me no choice but to ask for help. There are no options in the menu to adjust any controls whatsoever – all motion and physical controls are mandatory. The little robot that couldSince this is a free pack-in game there is no deliberation required on whether or not you should buy Astro’s Playroom — you’ve already got access to it for free if you own a PS5.
Each of the four main zones are themed after hardware concepts such as the SSD Speedway and the Cooling Springs. Cooling Springs for example is chocked full of various PS3 models, the PS Sharp Shooter gun, the PSP, Vita, and so on. Astro’s Playroom is not that game, as it’s quite short and still at least 50% tech demo, but since so few will ever get to play Rescue Mission it’s an important step towards that goal. It’s also free with every new PlayStation 5, so it’s the one game that you can almost guarantee everyone will play – and it gives a very good first impression. Puzzle Piece 4/4 – Once you reach the section of the level where it is raining, before going up the dark wall, jump to the platform on the right to reach this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 1/4 – Right at the start of the level, look down and to the left to see a group of three of the spinnable flowers.
For example, the roller ball goes from being asphalt paths to a pinball machine-like level, while the ship mostly stays the same but has a fun boss to beat with its rockets. In between each standard platforming level are dedicated sections to unique suits for Astro. Memory Meadow, for instance, Astro becomes a little roller ball that uses the Dualsense’s trackpad for control instead of the left thumbstick. Astro’s Playroom is a very simple and small in-scale and scope game. Every bit of platforming presents almost no challenge, and so do the enemies.
So often that’s where magic in video games happens, and that’s most certainly the case here. On its own, this is a beautifully crafted, exquisitely paced and absolutely gorgeous 3D platformer. Combined with the hardware it’s bundled on, it’s something very special indeed – and one of the best launch titles I can remember in an age. A tech demo shouldn’t have this much of a following, but that’s the power of Team Asobi’s Astro’s Playroom. The Astro Bots made their debut with the PlayStation VR tech demo, The Playroom. https://g28.autos/ of the VR device and left an impression on the higher-ups at Sony.

I finished all 16 of the main levels, the final area, and completed each of the speed run trials in around three hours. That’s not very much content — but I still have well over half of the game’s collectibles left to discover, which could easily double the amount of time spent if I wanted to go for the platinum. I used this example last time and I like to explain that with how precise the haptics are here I can actually tell the difference between when Astro walks on wood, metal, glass, and so on.
